Treatment Methods Of The Antipsychotic Drug Therapy

IV. Treatment- There are many beneficial treatment methods for schizophrenia. Of the most common treatment methods is the antipsychotic drug therapy. â€Å"A study done in 2013 of 43,049 patients, they compared the effectiveness and tolerance of fifteen antipsychotic drugs. The study found that all fifteen antipsychotic drugs were significantly more effective than placebos.† (Cetin, 2015, p.97) It has also been a well-known fact that those diagnosed with schizophrenia and not taking any antipsychotic medications experience the symptoms of hallucination and delusions which are unable to be treated through therapy alone. This is why it is important that patients with schizophrenia not only use therapeutic treatment but antipsychotic medications as well. Another form of therapy that is important for schizophrenics is psychotherapy. Psychotherapy such as cognitive-behavior therapy can be beneficial because it provides the patient with education about the causes of their hallucinat ions, helps the patient learn when and how to expect their own symptoms and how to prepare for them, how to interpret those hallucinations, and then how to cope with the hallucinations and delusions with techniques such as breathing and relaxation techniques. Top on the list of these considerations is funding. Where will they get the finance to pay for the surgery? Recently the struggle for coverage of transgender health by insurance companies has found its way to Facebook, where people are urged to register their protest against this denial of fundamental rights. On the page it is affirmed that corrective surgery is a necessity not just a cosmetic procedure. Many transgender people are denied coverage by insurance companies although their condition is a medical necessity. Most insurance companies refuse to cover transgender health because such surgery is considered cosmetic, therefore not a necessity. A refusal to grant insurance cover to transgender people can have disastrous effects. Lombardi and Van Servellen (291-296) find that a lack of health insurance and the financial difficulty which transgender people face can lead them to turn to non prescription drug. Thus it is important to assess insurance issues as they affect transgender health care. Problems associated with Transgender Health Care Firstly, the first problem with transgender health care is access. Finance determines access. In other words, the patient has to pay to have the specific surgical procedure performed. This is where insurance companies come in. They need to collaborate with employers in order to provide the needed insurance cover. In the study, â€Å"Serving the Health Care Needs of Transgender Students,† Beemyn (7-8) identifies three pressing concerns of transgender students namely: accommodation, bathrooms and healthcare. Of these three, Beemyn (8) notes that healthcare is the least addressed on most campuses in the US. The study finds that transgender students often have negative experiences at designated health centers where personnel do not address their needs. Thus, most of them turn to health care facilities off campus if they can afford it or go entirely without healthcare at all. Transgender people face a lot of health issues. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality (2) a partial list of transgender health issues includes the following: Violence, HIV/AIDS and other STD prevention and treatment, Substance abuse prevention and treatment, Depression suicide, Lack of health insurance, Lack of health insurance coverage for trans health services, Gender identity disorder (GID) as the principal diagnostic means determining access to trans health services, Lack of FDA approval for transgender hormonal therapy, Injection silicone use, The misclassification of sex reassignment surgery as experimental Furthermore, in their Schilder et al (1643, 1659) found that in a survey of 47 HIV positive men in Vancouver, all the transgender ones of the lot worked in the sex industry. Although this cannot be linked to lack of insurance cover on the face of it, there exists a remote relationship. As a vulnerable group, transgender people need support in order to live production lives. With adequate support, they will disprove stereotype. One of the vital support systems which transgender people need is health insurance that will give them access to quality health care. Comparisons are often drawn between transgender people and people from other groups who need essential medical treatment similar to what is denied to transgender people by insurance because it is considered cosmetic. The group, Transgender at Work argues that if Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is given to post menopausal women (under insurance cover), it is discriminatory to refuse insurance for the same HRT treatments to transgender people.

Interventions for Special Education Students Teaching students with special needs comes with unique responsibilities and enormous rewards. Modifications- both to your physical classroom and to your teaching style- are often necessary to accommodate them. Modifications mean change while making accommodations means adapting to those things you cant change- existing circumstances. Interventions involve skill-building strategies that are designed to move special students to more advanced academic levels. Do you and your classroom have what it takes? Heres a checklist of strategies to help you develop a  classroom that should meet the needs of all your students. ___ Special needs students should be within close proximity to the teacher or the teachers assistant. ___ Implement procedures that are well understood by all your students to keep noise levels at an acceptable level. The Yacker Tracker is a worthwhile investment. ___ Create a special carrel or private location for taking tests, and/or revise existing seating to accommodate students who more acutely need to be free of distractions for ultimate success.   ___ Eliminate as much clutter as you can. This will also help keep distractions to a minimum. ___ Try to avoid presenting instructions or directions only verbally. Use graphic organizers, as well as written or graphical instructions. ___ Clarifications and reminders should be given as regularly as necessary. ___ Needy students should have agendas which you give them regularly and that you refer to yourself. ___ Communication between home and school should be in place for all students, but particularly for those students with special needs. Your relationship and interaction with a childs parents or guardian can be an invaluable tool and ensure consistency between the classroom and home. ___ Break down assignments and work into manageable chunks, particularly for students with attention span deficits. Provide frequent breaks. Make learning fun, not a draining challenge. A tired child is never at his most receptive to new information. ___ Your classroom expectations should be clearly outlined and understood, as well as consequences for inappropriate behaviors. Your approach for conveying this information will depend on the individual special needs of the children involved.   ___ Extra assistance should be available when needed, either from yourself or from a more accomplished peer. ___ Praise students when you catch  them doing things correctly, but dont overdo it. The praise should be a real reward, not something that happens over every small accomplishment but rather in response to a string of related accomplishments. ___ Use behavior contracts to target specific behaviors.   ___ Make  sure students are familiar with and understand your curing and prompting system that helps them stay on task. ___ Never begin instructions or directions until you have the undivided attention of your entire class. ___ Allow additional wait time for your special needs students. ___ Provide special needs students with regular, ongoing feedback and always promote their self-esteem. ___ Make sure all your learning experiences really do  promote learning. ___ Provide activities that are multi-sensory and that  take learning styles into consideration.   ___ Allow time to let your special needs students repeat instructions and directions. ___ Modify and/or shorten assignments to ensure success. ___ Have methods in place so students can have text written to them and so they can dictate their answers. ___ Provide opportunities for cooperative learning. In most countries today, changes are happening so fast that we are at times unable to preserve relevant cultural aspects and values. In the field of curriculum, change is and will continue to be, the factor for any educational undertaking. (Bauzon, 2002) In the new century, the educational environment is rapidly changing and the roles and responsibilities of the teacher s become demanding in the most part of the world. In our country today, the curriculum of our educational system has been revised to meet its demands. According to President Benigno S. Aquino, â€Å"We need to add two years to our basic education. Those who can afford pay up to fourteen years of schooling before university. Thus, their children are getting into the best universities and the best jobs after graduation. I want at least 12 years for our public school children to give them an even chance at succeeding† (www. google. com ). According to the K to 12 Deped Primer (2011), â€Å"K-12 means â€Å"Kindergarten and the 12 years of elementary and secondary education. † Kindergarten points to the 5-year old child who undertakes the standardized curriculum for preschoolers. Elementary education refers to 6 years of primary school (Grades 1-6) while secondary education means four years of junior high school (Grades 7-10 or HS Year 1-4). In addition to this, two years are now allotted for senior high school (Grades 11-12 or HS Year 5-6). Furthermore, the short duration of our basic education program puts Filipinos who are interested to either work or study abroad at a disadvantage. This is because other countries see our 10-year program as incomplete, which then, causes Filipino graduates to not be considered as professionals abroad. The first teacher of the children are their parents. They have a great role in the development of the young. They become part of the environment of learning at home. They follow-up the lessons of their children especially in the basic education. They sent their children to school to be taught, to be trained and to gain knowledge. Parents are supporters of the curriculum. They would like to get the best of his/her investment in education. They are willing to pay the cost of educating their child for as long as their children get the best learning or schooling experiences. They aims to have a children that has a bright future and a changed individual who is easily adjusted to his fast changing world. (Bilbao, p. 80) This study finds it important to research about the awareness of the k+12 curriculum in the parents of the grade 7 students. The parents of the Grade 7students ofCantilan National High School, Madrid National High School – Union Annex, and Surigao Del Sur State University Cantilan Laboratory High School are the respondents of this research. The programs offered by the University are on Level 1 and 2 and it is accredited by the AACUP. In as much as the data that will be gathered in this study will be very helpful to the curriculum experts, managers and administrators who play an important role in shaping the school curriculum and who are responsible in the formulation of the philosophy, vision, mission, and objectives. The result of this study could provide the needed information in formulating possible solutions for reactions of the parents of the grade 7 students of the CNHS, MNHS-Union Annex and SDSSU Cantilan Laboratory High School. Conceptual Framework As shown in figure 1, the first box contains all about the k+12 curriculum and level of awareness of the parents of the Grade 7 students about it. The middle box contains the independent variables which are the parents of the Grade 7 students of the CNHS, MNHS-Union Annex, and SDSSU Laboratory High School. The interaction of the independent and dependent variables is now the awareness of k+12 program in the parents of Grade 7. This is shown in box 3, the output of the study. As Smithers (2003) said that, â€Å"it has been in contention that teachers should play a more pivotal role in all phases of curriculum-making from initial planning through development try-out, installation, evaluation and revision. More and more classroom teachers are being tapped to serve in school curriculum committees and task force. Being centered in education, Cantilan has a lot of schools to be proud of. Among of this are the Madrid National High School-Union Annex,Surigao Del Sur State University and Cantilan National High School. Although Sdssu-Cantilan concentrate for the tertiary education yet it offers a secondary in which they called as the laboratory high school with its limits to100students as of scoolyear2012-2013. on the other hand,thecantialn national high school offers 3 curriculum the ESEP,SPA,and RBEC with 2000 students as its latest enrollees . as an institution of higher learning ,both the schools are known in uplifting a quality education and promoting the growth and development of the students inconsonance with the national development towards quality education. Fig. 2 presents the map of Surigaodel Sur where Municipality of Cantilan is located. Research Design This is a descriptive evaluative or assessment study appropriate for profiling the variables of research which intends to know the level of awareness among parents of the Grade -7 students under K-12 program of Madrid National High School- Union Annex, Cantilan National High School, and Surigao Del Sur State University- Laboratory High School. The data that to be gathered will be recorded, organized, and interrupted in view of the objectives set in the study. Research Respondent This study is confined to all the parents of grade-7 students in Madrid National High School- Union Annex, Surigao del Sur State University-Laboratory High School and Cantilan National High School in the school year 2012-2013. The questionnaires will be given to the parents of the Grade 7 students of Madrid National High School- Union Annex, Cantilan National High School, and Surigao Del Sur State University. Statistical Treatment. The following formulas will be used in this study: 1. Weighted Mean This is used to determine the Socio-Demographic Profile of the parents interms of age, educational attainment and occupation. Likewise, weighted mean is to be applied to determine the acceptability of the k+12 program among the parents of the Grade 7 students of Madrid National High School- Union Annex, Cantilan National High School, and Surigao Del Sur State University. 2. Simple Percentage Computation This is used to determine the percentage of the respondents. 3. Pearson Chi-Square This is used to determine if there is a significant relationship of the respondent’s socio-demographic profile and the extent of awareness of the k+12 curriculum. CHAPTER IV PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA This chapter presents, analyzes and interprets the data gathered from the questionnaire to the concerned respondents. The respondents of the study were the parents of the grade 7 students in CNHS, SDSSU-H. S LAB. , MNHS-UA. The researchers limit their respondents to 50% of the population from each school. The study made use of the survey method which was appropriate for the profiling and gathering of data. Moreover, the data were interpreted using the mean, simple percentage computation and the Pearson chi-squared test. Findings Based on the analysis of the gathered data, the different findings in this research study are summarized as follows: 1. Each one of them has it's own way of portraying the time, the characters, and the themes. Being shown a variety of opinions about what exactly was going on in Shakespeare's head when he was writing this magnificent play allows us to be open to our own ideas about it's creation. It gives everyone the chance to put on their own version in their head. Thus making it a very controversial play.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Sometimes ideas and opinions are so wide spread that people argue about what exactly was the purpose of a certain action or scene. This is what leads to the creation of various different versions. Each different movie is actually a certain directors' take on the play. Each of these versions is so unique that it might sometimes be difficult to visualize that they all tell the same story.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The original story is that of two star crossed lovers and there journey to finally be together. The lovers, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet are forced to deal with the fact that their families have been feuding for generations. In other words this means that they are forbidden to communicate with members of the other family; Nonetheless have a romantic relationship with one another.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  After many a battle with members of Juliet's extended family, Romeo winds up killing Tibault, her cousin. He is then banished from the city of Verona, Italy. Juliet, heartbroken yet confused, then decides to take drastic measures and fake her own death to keep herself from being forced to marry another man that has been chosen by her father. Her plan is to send Rom... ...g that I was used to discussing in any of my English classes throughout high school and college. The main reason for the lack of discussion about William Shakespeare's life is probably that there are close to no facts about himself. This leaves a wide gap open for theories and different ideas.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I can't believe it has taken me this long to even speculate on his life and time. Often I forget about the author when reading novels or plays. I don't do this on purpose but I am just not used to seriously discussing an author's thoughts on their own work. I only imagine what Shakespeare would think of the different versions of his play and his life. Would he consider all of them accurate? Might he think that they are attempting to be as successful as his masterpiece is? And last but not least would he think that Shakespeare In Love is ridiculous or is it true?

In Jane Harrisons play Stolen Essay

In Jane Harrison’s play, ‘Stolen’, the characters of Ruby, Anne and Jimmy are utilised in order to position the audience to feel sympathetic towards those affected by the ‘Stolen Generation’. Through her plot Harrison is able to demonstrate the pain faced by the characters. Furthermore, through her script, she is also able to show the mental disintegration of the characters throughout time. Therefore, it is imperative to examine the ways in which she has used these particular facets of her play in order to rouse the emotions of the audience. Jane Harrison utilizes the script of the play ‘Stolen’ to position the audience to feel sympathy for Anne. Anne is an aboriginal female who, adopted at a young age by a white Australian family. Anne was chosen by the white couple because ‘she was by far the best’ (THE CHOSEN pg 7). Anne is seen to have a ‘good upbringing’ (THE CHOSEN pg 7) compared to the other characters in ‘Stolen’. She receives a ‘sense of security’ (THE CHOSEN pg 7) and ‘a good education’ (THE CHOSEN pg 7), but Harrison reveals to the audience that Anne has to confront problems that none of the other characters have to face. Later on in the play, Anne is confused when she asks the question ‘Am I Black or White?’ (AM I BLACK OR WHITE? pg 28). Anne is torn between her origin and the people she has been brought up with. Harrison demonstrates this theme of ‘not belonging anywhere ‘through the script. Phrases such as ‘We’ve given you everything’ (AM I BLACK OR WHITE? pg 28) opposed to ‘But we’re your real family’ (AM I BLACK OR WHITE? pg 28). Harrison creates a binary opposition between the aboriginals, Anne’s blood and race, and the white Australians. Anne is rejected from both families, thus being rejected from everyone she knows, not belonging anywhere. Therefore, Harrison presents her view to the audience that even though Anne was better of materially compared to the other characters she had to experience a different type of pain that the other characters in ‘Stolen’ do not have to encounter. Harrison portrays the message that all children of the ‘Stolen Generation’ suffered, physically and/or mentally. Harrison uses the character Ruby to show the audience how mentally affected a child from the ‘Stolen Generation’ can be. Ruby was taken away from her family at a young age, just like many other children of the ‘Stolen Generation’. Harrison positions the audience to see that Ruby had to go through hard times as a child in the orphanage. In the scene ‘UNSPOKEN ABUSE 1’ (pg 8), Ruby has come back from a weekend away with a white family, the other children are curious and ask Ruby â€Å"What else did ya do?† (UNSPOKEN ABUSE 1, pg 8), and Ruby replies with â€Å"Promised not to tell† (UNSPOKEN ABUSE 1, pg 8). The audience does not know what happened to Ruby on that weekend but by the language Harrison has used, it seems that whatever actions that occurred on that weekend had affected Ruby had changed her. Harrison shows the audience in ‘RUBY COMFORTING HER BABY’ (pg. 9), that Ruby was an ordinary girl who played ‘with her doll’ (RUBY COMFORTING HER BABY, pg. 9). This same scene also shows the audience the horrible memories that Ruby have in her young mind, as Ruby is nurturing her doll, she seems like she is pretending to be her own mother and the doll being her. Ruby tells her doll ‘I love you Ruby’ (RUBY COMFORTING HER BABY pg.9). When Ruby grows up and leaves the orphanage, she goes and works for a white family. One day, her family come to visit, but it is revealed to the audience that Ruby is mentally disabled and is not well. Ruby’s family want to take her home but Ruby replies â€Å"Don’t live in no home any more. I work for the Hardwick’s† (RUBY’S FAMILY COME TO VISIT, pg. 31). It is clearly shown that Ruby cannot see that those people are her family. Harrison displays to the audience that in Ruby’s mind, Ruby believes that she has no family, reinforcing the fact that the children of the ‘Stolen Generation’ suffered immensely. Harrison shows the audience throughout th e play, the downfall of Ruby’s mental state Jimmy is a character in the play ‘Stolen’, who is an aboriginal male who has experienced pain throughout the play and this is shown through the play with the Harrison’s use of the plot and script. The character Jimmy spent his childhood years in an orphanage. The audience see that Jimmy had been brought up with no parents, just like many of the other characters in ‘Stolen’. Like Ruby, Jimmy goes away with a white family for a weekend and comes back changed, more timid than before. Jimmy grows up and leaves the orphanage he enters a bar and some indigenous people recognised him as ‘Wajurri’ (JIMMY’S STORY, pg. 27), and they said they knew his mother. Jimmy comes to visit her but before he can meet his mother, she dies. Jimmy is so devastated that he kills himself to finally ‘go meet my mother’ (SANDY AT THE END OF THE ROAD, pg. 36). The characters Ruby, Jimmy and Anne have many similarities and differences throughout the play and Harrison uses these similarities and differences through the script and plot. Both Ruby and Anne eventually meet their families. At the end of the play, Anne is accepted by her aboriginal and white families, feeling a sense of belonging towards both of her families. The audience see that Ruby is become completely insane and even though she faces her family, she does not believe that it is her family and goes back to work. Jimmy does not get to meet his family. When Jimmy is grown up, he discovers that his mother is alive, but when he comes to visit her, he finds out that she has died. This was extremely traumatic for Jimmy, and he couldn’t endure the grief and resorts to ending his own life. Jimmy, Ruby and Anne all faced mentally enduring events at some point in their lives. But only the only happing ending out of these three characters is the one of Anne’s. Ruby’s end is a more tragic one, as she is permanently scarred from the events that have occurred to her in her life. Jimmy also suffers a tragic end as the he commits suicide. Harrison depicts the harshness and undergone by both of these characters. Ruby and Jimmy’s upbringing were very dissimilar in comparison to Anne’s, Anne living in a family that cared and provided for her, was contrasted by Harrison, towards Jimmy and Ruby’s lifestyle. Both Jimmy and Ruby were brought up in an orphanage with other aboriginal children whose families were also taken away from them. The play ‘Stolen’, written by Jane Harrison shows the audience the hardship undergone by the characters, Ruby, Jimmy and Anne. Though they are different in many aspects, these characters share the pain of not knowing where to belong and this is shown by Harrison puts forward this idea through her use of the plot and the script. Movie Analysis Paper on The Joy Luck Club

The movie I selected is â€Å"The Joy Luck Club† that illustrates the gap and the misunderstanding between foreign-born mothers from China and their American-born daughters who are ignorant of their culture, life, morals, and ways. Jing-mei, the main character in the film, has taken her mother, Suyuan’s place playing mahjong in a weekly gathering that her deceased mother had organized in China and revived in San Francisco- The Joy Luck Club. The club’s other members- auntie Lindo, Ying-ying, and An-mei are three of her mother’s oldest friends and fellow immigrants.The movie, which was filmed after the success of the book by Amy Tan, alternates viewpoints from each set of mother-daughter’s story, in which each recalls the relationship with their own mothers. Following that, the daughters- Waverly, Jing-mei, Lena, and Rose, relate their recollections of their childhood relationships with their mothers. As they grow up, they narrate the troubles in the ir marriages and careers. The daughters’ search for solutions inevitably brings them back to their relationships with the older generation.Once I went over the movie list on the guideline, I instantly knew that I was going to choose this movie as the name popped up. The Joy Luck Club has always been one of my favorite books in my teenage years. I was first introduced to the book version by my English tutor in 7th grade, and found it fascinating as it reflects the similarity the movie has between my family and myself. My family emigrated from Taiwan to the U. S. when I was 9-years-old, so that partly made me an Asian American who can speak a decent amount of Chinese.Grewing up, I was aware of the clash between the two opposing cultures of the East and West as I interacted with friends from the American culture and parents from the Chinese culture. As I read the book, I can strongly relate the stories to my own personal experiences, like acting as â€Å"obedient daughter† by playing the piano to make mother proud, and mothers comparing each of their child to others. The book encouraged me to reflect back to my relationship with my own mother, and challenged me to think about my own identity as a 1.5-generation Asian American.The first time I watched the movie was after I finished reading the book in 7th grade. At that time, nothing really hit me much, that may be partly because I was not emotionally mature enough to have had enough experience to relate to the stories. So instead, I was just focusing on how the plots in the movie were different from that in the book, what scenes were left out in the movie that were included in the book, how each character’s look is compared to my own imagination†¦etc.But as I watched it a second time in the past few days, the feelings just progressed so strongly that it turned out irresistible to refrain from tears, especially during the last scene as Jing-mei reunited with her long lost Chinese half-sis ters as she returned back to China. I guess, as I am now a young adult now, I can more maturely attach the emotional feelings of the daughters to my own feelings as an Asian American. I now try to treasure the time I get to spend with my mom, and respect, appreciate the every little thing she did for me while I was growing up.Throughout the movie, there were several scenes perpetuating prejudice and discrimination. Gender role is a big problem that can be easily identified. For example, in China, Lindo was forced to live almost as a servant to her mother-in-law and husband, conforming to idealized roles of feminine submission and duty. Another example is that An-mei’s mother being raped by her father, that she must marry him to preserve her honor; whereas he, as a man, may marry any number of concubines without being judged harshly.In America, the daughters also encountered the problem of sexism as they grew up. Rose’s passivity with Ted is based on the stereotypical g ender roles of a proactive, heroic male and a submissive, victimized female. Lena’s agreement to serve as a mere associate in the architecture firm that she helped her husband to found, as well as her agreement to make only one seventh of his salary, may also be based on sexist ideals that she has absorbed. After watching the movie, I became more aware of the inferior role women play in both Chinese and American culture.Men were undoubtedly in a dominant position socially, economically, and sexually. Discrimination against ethnicity can also be seen in the Chinese in-group from the daughters’ behaviors. Even though the daughters were genetically Chinese and have been raised in Chinese households, they also identified with and felt at home in modern American culture. Waverly, Rose, and Lena all had white boyfriends and husbands, yet they regarded their mothers’ customs and tastes as old-fashioned and ridiculous.They have also spent most of their childhood escapin g their Chinese identity- Lena would walk around the neighborhood with her eyes opened to the widest to make them look European. Jing-mei denied having any internal Chinese aspects and insisted her Chinese identity was limited only to her external features. Waverly would have joyfully clapped her hands if her mother had told her she did not look Chinese. The examples mentioned above depict some of the prejudice the daughters’ formed against their own Chinese ethnicity.Not only does prejudice comes from the in-group, it comes from the out-groups as well. The most conspicuous example is when Rose’s mother-in-law pulled Rose aside and tried to convince her that Ted was going to work for a big firm, that other people are not as â€Å"understandable† as them, at the same time indirectly asking her to leave Ted because she was not â€Å"White†. Another example is when Waverly introduced Rich into the family and brought him home for dinner.Lindo’s condesc ending gaze at Rich when he did not understand the Chinese tradition of eating and criticized her cooking made her being more despiteful of the â€Å"Caucasian† Rich. The last example I picked up on is at the very beginning, when Jing-mei was playing mahjong with the three aunties, and auntie Lindo commented on Jing-mei having known to play Jewish mahjong and not familiar with Chinese mahjong. She disdainfully expressed that the two types are entirely different, that Jewish mahjong has no strategy while Chinese mahjong is very tricky.Although just of a subtle hint, I translated it as auntie Lindo’s prejudice towards the Jews. Alongside from the prejudice and the discriminations, I found several of the old Chinese traditional stereotypes in the movie to be fascinating for me to relate to. The scenes where Jing-mei’s mother was escaping the Japanese war in China with the twin babies made me think back to my grandparents escaping the Communist armies with my baby u ncle and aunt and fleeing to Taiwan by a boat.The scenes where auntie Lindo and Jing-mei’s mother was sitting at Jing-mei’s piano recital comparing the accomplishments of their daughters made me relate back to when my mom was constantly telling me the kids in the neighborhood passing the piano exam with higher levels than me, or that my friends scoring a very good score on the SAT, etc. Elements from the Chinese belief system- the twelve animal zodiac, the five elements, reappeared in the aunties’ explanations of their personalities in which I used to talk about to compare personalities with friends.One last stereotypical resemblance I noticed is the mothers’ sacrifices of love. Many of the mothers make great sacrifices for their children and parents. An-mei’s mother sliced off a piece of her own flesh to put in her mother’s soup, superstitiously hoping to cure her through her obedience. Later, she committed suicide in order to protect An-me i’s future status in Wu-Tsing’s household since she knew he was afraid of ghosts. Jing-mei’s mother also took an extra job cleaning the house in order to earn Jing-mei the opportunity to practice piano.These examples make me think back to my own mother, who decided to let our whole family immigrate to the U. S. in order to avoid my health problem with tympanitis (inflammation of the eardrum) that I caught for a long time since childhood. To sum it up, The Joy Luck Club is a wonderful movie to watch that explores the conflicts between the two Chinese generations in two different cultures through storytelling and viewpoints. One can definitely learn much about gender role and prejudice through watching this movie by presenting two very different cultures while learning to appreciate the difference.
